Things to Consider when Selecting a Surrogate

No matter how you’ve come to your surrogacy journey, selecting a surrogate is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. As a San Francisco surrogacy agency, we have seen many different types of people come to this process, and they select surrogates based on any number of qualities. There are so many things to consider about a person who will carry your baby for you. Most surrogacy agencies ask quite a bit of information about their surrogates so that you can get a better picture of who they are and what they are like – because it matters. Of course, most agencies will have strict requirements about who can be a surrogate: they can not smoke or do drugs, cannot have STDs or other diseases that can risk the pregnancy, they have to be secure, they have to undergo psychological evaluations, and have to have at least one healthy pregnancy before they can even get entered into the system.

But where do you go from there? How can you choose the best option for your family? It can be complicated – but the good news is that there are ways to decide on the perfect option.

Selecting A Surrogate

If you do not already have a surrogate that you want to work with, you can look through rosters and lists of surrogates without having an idea about who to choose. Still, there are some important factors you may want to take into consideration when choosing a carrier for your baby. These can include:

Personality: What type of personality do you (the intended parent) get along with? In most cases, you will spend at least some time with this person, so you will want to know whether or not you get along.

Has this person been a surrogate before: Sometimes, intended parents want to work with someone who has had a successful surrogacy before theirs. This can help to calm some of the nerves intended parents may have and it shows that the surrogate understands the process. It is important to note that most surrogates require more compensation if they have already been a surrogate.

Is this surrogate willing to carry multiples? Some surrogates are only willing to carry one baby at a time – but sometimes a surrogate will be willing to carry more. If that is a path that you want to take, you should find a surrogate who is willing to carry multiples.

Relationship during surrogacy: Sometimes, a surrogate is willing to have as much contact as you want and other times, they do not want a lot of contact. Other times, it just depends on location. Figure out how much interaction you want with your surrogate and narrow down the list from there.

Relationship after surrogacy: Do you want your surrogate to stay in your child’s life? If so, make sure to look for a surrogate who is willing to have a relationship once the child is delivered.

At the end of the day, you want to look for a surrogate that you know you can trust. For nine months (give or take), this person will be imperative to the health and safety of your child’s life. You want to find someone who genuinely enjoys pregnancy. If you choose to work with a surrogacy agency, much of the groundwork is done for you and you should have plenty of great options available.

Ready To Find A Surrogate?

Being a parent through surrogacy is one of the most amazing and life-changing experiences you can have in your life. It will give you the chance to become a parent – something so many people dream about their entire lives. Still, it can be quite scary to do it alone, which is why so many people seek out a surrogacy agency to help them reach their goals.
