Tools To Explain Being A Surrogate In CA To Your Children

So you’ve made the decision to become a Surrogate in Sacramento, Los Angeles, or some other part of California and you need to explain your decision to your children. How can you do that? Every one of the Surrogates that we work with at Egg Donor and Surrogacy Institute need to have this conversation with their children, and we’ve come up with some tips and tricks to help you discuss what can be a delicate matter.

You Can Compare It To Babysitting

One thing that you may want to do is compare being a Surrogate to being a babysitter, just in a different way. This will work best for kids who have had babysitters and know what it is like. They understand that you are taking care of something that you won’t always have. They will also understand that you need to take really good care of the baby so that it can be safe.

Read Books About Surrogacy

For toddlers and younger children who can sit through a book, there are plenty of books out there that talk about the different ways to build families and become parents. There are even some about surrogacy!

Some of the best books to help explain surrogacy are “My Mom is a Surrogate” or “The Kangaroo Pouch.”

If reading isn’t something that will attract the attention of your children, you can also consider YouTube videos that explain what a Surrogate is through visuals.

No matter what you choose, you may want to read through it or watch through it before you show it to your children, just so you can get a heads up on anything you need to explain.

Answer Questions

Your child is probably going to have a lot of questions, depending on their age. Be sure to answer those questions and not just shrug them off when they ask them, even if there isn’t an easy or “appropriate” answer. You can, of course, take time to sit back and think about the answer, but you should always answer the question in an appropriate amount of time.

If there is a question that you don’t know how to answer, you can always reach out to your caseworker and they can help you to formulate a great answer.

Sometimes Slower Is Better

Sometimes the best thing you can do is introduce the idea slowly. You may want to start with just explaining what a Surrogate is, then tell your child that you are going to be a Surrogate. Then, you can introduce the idea of another family and tell your children what you need to tell them about the couple.
