Things to Keep In Mind During Your Surrogacy Journey

Surrogacy journeys are beautiful experiences, but there are some things that intended parents are going to have to keep in mind when they decide to work with a Gestational Surrogate. There is a lot of information out there about surrogacy for Intended Parents, and details about what the experience will be like, but there are some things that just go unmentioned or avoided. Things that we really do need to talk about and we encourage everyone involved to think about before they agree to surrogacy. We will detail some of those here, but if you have any questions or concerns moving forward, you are always free to contact our team.

You Are Part of A Team

Surrogacy is a beautiful experience, but it is a bit of a team effort. EDSI and many other surrogacy agencies have worked to get the best players on their team, including doctors, lawyers, surrogacy professionals, and caseworkers. However, you, your partner, and the Gestational Surrogate that you choose will have to be parts of this team as well.

It can be hard to balance out everything at first. Sure, everyone is working towards the same goal but sometimes there are differing opinions on what that means. We do our best to have a “pre-game huddle” so that everyone is on the same page from the start. In the middle, there may be some differing opinions as well, but as long as everyone is focused on winning, it’s a beautiful thing.

Every Journey Is Unique

While we try to be as prepared for every situation as possible, sometimes there are just twists and turns that we didn’t expect. That’s why it is so important to talk to your caseworker whenever you feel a certain way, keep open lines of communication with your team, and really be honest with yourself and everyone involved.

We’ve been in the surrogacy field for over twenty years and there are still things that surprise us – like the Covid-19 pandemic, for example. However, we are firm believers that good preparation, communication, and a strong core team can get us through virtually any situation.

Time Zones Are Important

If you are going to become a parent in the United States but you don’t live in the US, you need to take time zones into consideration. Even just a few hours can mean a lot when it comes to communication. We use every avenue we know to stay connected to you: WeChat, email, texting, phone calls, Zooms, and more. We get up early and stay up late to help ensure this process is a good one for you – but you may need to work with us as well.

This Is A Trust Exercise

Mostly, you need to realize that this is a bit of a trust exercise. You need to trust that your Surrogate is going to do what is right for you, your growing family, and her and her family as well. You need to trust the surrogacy agency that we won’t lead you astray. You need to trust your gut instincts when it comes to choosing an agency, Surrogate, and Egg or Sperm Donors.

There is a lot here, but it is so worth it in the end.
