The Surrogacy Process In California Explained

If you are considering becoming a Surrogate, you probably want to know a bit more about the surrogacy process before you apply. It is normal to feel a yearning to help build families but still not know all of the details of what it will take. We cannot explain everything in a singular blog post, but we can go over the basics. To learn more about , feel free to reach out to our team and we can answer any questions that you may have.

Phase 1 Of The Surrogacy Process: Initial Screenings

The first phase of the surrogacy process is to undergo some basic screenings. We will request your medical records for our doctors to look for any issues that may emerge. At the same time, we may ask that you undergo a psychological evaluation to determine if you are mentally and emotionally prepared for this journey. Remember that your health is one of the most important things to us. If we don’t think surrogacy will be good for you, we will suggest other ways to help a family.

Finally, we complete a background check on you and your partner. We want to ensure that you are going to be healthy and taken care of throughout your pregnancy. If we see anything, we will talk to you about the situation, we know that everyone has a past.

Phase 2 Of The Surrogacy Process: Making A Match

The next step is to officially connect you with Intended Parents (IPs). We will work with you to review different profiles and see who you connect with, at least on paper. You will spend quite a bit of time with the IPs, and you will be carrying their baby, so you want to ensure they are people you are comfortable around. Once you are matched with IPs, you will have an official match. Then, we will go through signing contracts, final medical evaluations, talking about how to handle aspects of the surrogacy, and getting you ready to carry their baby.

Phase 3 Of The Surrogacy Process: Getting Pregnant

The next step is to get pregnant. You will undergo In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), where the egg and sperm are manually combined in a laboratory and the resulting embryo is implanted into your uterus. This is called a transfer, and the entire process will be explained to you before you sign a contract. We will be there to answer any questions.

Before IVF, you will need to take hormones to prepare your body. Our fertility specialists will monitor you so that everything goes as smoothly as possible.

Once the embryo is implanted and we test for pregnancy, the rest of the process is fairly straightforward. For the first 10 or so weeks after IVF, you will continue with hormone injections and meetings with the fertility specialist to ensure that everything is going well.

Around the second trimester, you will be released to your OB-GYN and need to undergo routine check-ups. The IPs may talk to you about special classes that you can take together, or ask to go to appointments with you. This will all be up to you and established before you start – there shouldn’t be any surprises.

Phase 4 Of The Surrogacy Process: Delivery

The final stage of the surrogacy process is delivery. You will plan this with your OB-GYN and the IPs long before it happens. The IPs have steps that they need to take before you give birth. You will be able to control much of what happens, down to who is in the room with you.
