LGBT Surrogacy: What Your Timeline Will Look Like

If you are looking to start your LGBT surrogacy journey, you may have some questions about what your life will be like for the next year or so. One of the most common questions that we get is this one: how long does surrogacy take? There are so many variables that you need to consider when you plan ahead – and while we can give you estimates, know that no two journeys are the same. Instead, we can give you a rough estimate of the EDSI timeline for Intended Parents.

First Stage Of LGBT Surrogacy: Research

The first stage of LGBT surrogacy should be the research phase. This is when you start to look at different surrogacy agencies and compare them to each other. You need to talk to the people who work at that agency, get a feel for their philosophies, and then start looking at Surrogates.

During the research phase, the agency that you choose will also have to look into your background. We do this so that we can know the family we are building is one that will be safe and loving. Before you sign any contracts with anyone, we will guarantee that you know everything there is to know about our agency and what you can expect. We facilitate everything so that there aren’t any questions or surprises. This phase will be on your schedule – it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. When you are ready to get started, we will be as well.

Second Stage Of LGBT Surrogacy: Matching

At EDSI, we have a collection of Surrogates who are ready to get started. You can look through them online, from the comfort of your home. We try to provide all of the information that you could possibly need in this database, but you can also ask for more information. This timeline is, once again, flexible.

We suggest that you take your time with this phase because it is critical to your experience. Your relationship with your Surrogate will be important, so it is crucial that you are aligned.

Once you are matched, you aren’t quite ready to get started.

Third Stage Of LGBT Surrogacy: Surrogate Testing & Prep

While we prescreen all of our Surrogates, they will still need to go through some testing when they are selected as a surrogate. They will need to go through a few weeks of testing that includes psychological evaluations, medical clearances, and background checks. We require that our Surrogates meet certain qualifications before they get put into our databases, but we know that things can change quite quickly. As such, we can never be too careful.

Once the testing is complete and the contracts have been signed, the Surrogate will start getting her body ready for the embryo transfer. How long this process takes will largely depend on her body, it is usually somewhere around a month.

Fourth Stage Of LGBT Surrogacy: Embryo Transfers

For many people, the next stage is the most important: the embryo transfer. Carriers will go in for a fairly simple medical procedure to get the embryos transferred. They will then take a blood test about a week and a half after transfer to see if the embryos took.

If one or more embryos did take, the Surrogate will continue carrying the pregnancy like normal. If the embryos did not take, you may go through this process again with the same Surrogate.
