In today’s world, having values is important and can dictate a lot about your Intended Parent journey. Most people think that values will limit their journeys and make it harder, but that isn’t always our experience. Instead, having values that you stick to will make this experience more precious, deeper, and more personal to you.
We have values as well! We do a lot of research and talk to our Gestational Surrogates for a long time before we work with them. We have a strict set of requirements that we must adhere to, but we go above and beyond that. For more information about the surrogacy process, or how we can help you, contact us today.
It Determines Who You Pick As Your Surrogate
Your values are going to determine, to an extent, who you will pick as your Surrogate. There are some values that we consider non-negotiables: your surrogate needs to be drug and alcohol free, she needs to have a healthy body, and she needs to have custody of her children. She should also be responsible, have reliable transportation, and be an upstanding citizen.
But for some people, there are other considerations to make, and they can add some friction to the process. For example, if you are looking for a vegan or vegetarian Surrogate because that is important to you, it could be a little harder to find someone. There are hundreds of “preferences” that someone can have. If you want a specific religion, for example, you can ask for it. With a surrogacy agency, you are more likely to find a Surrogate who meets your qualifications, though it still make take some time.
Can Values Be A Detriment?
As mentioned, looking for Surrogates with particular values or qualities can make things a little more complex, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are a detriment. Instead, they can make your process that much more aligned with who you are and the type of family that you want to raise.
Sometimes, values will slow down the process and make it take longer. Sometimes, it can inflate the costs. You need to have a frank discussion with your partner, with your surrogacy agency, and with anyone else important to you to determine what to do.
Remember That You Get To Instill Values To Your Children
What happens if you can’t find a Surrogate that aligns with your values? That’s okay – you are going to be the person raising your child. You will be able to instill your values and raise them how you want to. A Surrogate Mother is part of your child’s journey and, if you choose, could remain a part of their life, but that doesn’t mean they get to dictate anything about how your child is raised, what they believe, and who they are.
With gestational surrogacy, you will use your own eggs and sperm if you can, so you don’t even have to weigh the nature versus nurture question. If you do use an Egg Donor or a Sperm Donor, you may want to be a bit more picky with their qualities and attributes. Even then, values are something we learn instead of something we are born having.
