If you’ve decided to use surrogacy to become a parent, there are many, many decisions that you are going to have to make – for the rest of your life! Being a parent is about making one choice after another. The most important choice you will make, at least right now, is who you will work with as your Surrogate. There are plenty of amazing women out there, but not everyone is suited to become a Surrogate.
A surrogate needs to be many different things and wear many different hats. She needs to be prepared for the experience, but so do you. If you are thinking about choosing a Surrogate, you want to think about these things:
The Type Of Relationship That You Want
No matter what type of relationship you want to have, a friendship, a romantic partnership, a business relationship, or a Surrogate/Intended Parent relationship, communication is key. The trick is to figure out what kind of communication you want to have. Many surrogacy agencies won’t put a value on forming a relationship with your Surrogate. Instead, they will match the two of you and allow the relationship to be tenuous at best. This can cause strain for everyone involved – and it can make the surrogacy journey feel less personal. It won’t feel like something you are doing and instead, it will feel like something that is happening to you.
EDSI seeks to form relationships between Intended Parents and Surrogates in accordance with both of your comfort levels. If you want to be more hands-on during the process, such as attending doctor appointments or Skyping with your Surrogate, that can be arranged. Everything needs to be determined before contracts are signed, but those needs can be met.
Her Overall Readiness
Another thing you may want to take into consideration is how ready your Surrogate is. Are you going to pick someone who will then back out? Is your Surrogate really prepared to take on this responsibility? You want to ensure that the Surrogate you choose is ready for this journey and feels supported during it. That is why you should work with an agency that has experience in nurturing Surrogates and helping them to feel taken care of at all times. Not only will this make the experience better for you, but it will help to ease some of your own stress.
Some Intended Parents prefer to work with Surrogates who have already taken on this responsibility.
Does The Surrogacy Agency Have Surrogates Ready?
Another thing you may want to consider when choosing a surrogacy agency is whether or not they have Surrogates who are ready to start. Not all agencies have pre-screened Surrogates who are waiting for a match. Instead, they will start working with you and then start looking for Surrogates. This lengthens the process quite a bit and can add even more stress to your mind.
Will You Have Someone To Go To In The Middle Of The Night?
The final consideration to make is whether or not you have someone to go to in the middle of the night if you have fears or questions. This probably won’t be your Surrogate, but it will be someone who works closely with your Surrogate and has the information available for you.
At EDSI, our caseworkers have the latest information from your Surrogate so that if you have questions, you can ask them. You won’t have to interrupt your Surrogate’s sleep!
