If you’re undergoing surrogacy in California as an intended parent, chances are you’ll be here through the duration or at the very least, you may want to see some of the sights while you’re visiting. Because most surrogates remain local throughout the journey as well, it can be helpful to know what options are close by, so you can stay near your hospital and care team while getting in a little R & R. On this page, we’ll highlight some of the most popular places for tourists and locals that are within a couple hours of EDSI to give you some inspiration for your own staycation.
The Egg Donor and Surrogacy Institute is located at 9465 Wilshire Blvd #300 Beverly Hills, CA 90212. That places our office in LA County in Southern California, close to Los Angeles and West Hollywood. Those flying into Los Angeles International Airport have little more than a 20-minute drive to our office, with everything from Santa Barbara to San Diego being close enough for surrogates and intended parents to travel to for a quick day trip.
7 Fun Staycation Ideas to Try During Surrogacy in California
1) Tour the SoCal Gardens
California has a rich history where gardens are concerned. Some speculate that this came from the promise of land to those who agreed to plant trees, while others point to migration patterns and early Japanese settlers who celebrated agriculture. In any case, expansive luxurious gardens became a part of the culture and a great source of pride for many. Angela Timmons put together a great list of the top gardens to see in SoCal, with sites like Virginia Robinson Gardens, one of Beverly Hills’ first luxury homes, and the expansive 78-acre Santa Barbara Botanic Garden making the list.
2) Take in San Diego
It may a little unfair to lump all of “America’s Finest City” into one because San Diego has so much to offer that it deserves a list of its own. It’s ideal for solo travelers, couples, and families, with a little something for everyone. The San Diego Zoo is a hit with just about everyone, features more than 650 unique species, and has more than 3,700 animals spread out across about 100 acres. History and culture buffs tend to enjoy the galleries and museums throughout Old Town San Diego, while foodies can take in a number of tiki bars, cantinas, and dives serving local favs like fish tacos. Little Italy is worth a stop as well.
3) Explore the Coves and Galleries of Laguna Beach
Laguna Beach became known as an artist colony during the early 1900s. With only one main road leading in and out, the earliest residents had its beauty all to themselves and were often inspired by its gorgeous coves. Today, Laguna Beach has retained much of that charm and always has some type of visual or performance art activity going on, in addition to the galleries. Those who want to take in nature will enjoy the scenic beaches as well as rolling hills ideal for hiking.
4) Visit a Theme Park
It probably goes without saying, but a high point for many is Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim. There’s also Legoland in Carlsbad, Seaworld in San Diego, Universal Studios Hollywood in Universal City, Knotts Berry Farm and Knott’s Soak City in Buena Park, plus Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, just to name a few of the most popular.
5) Take a Tour of Wine Country
While surrogates are generally expected to forego sampling, intended parents visiting the area who’d like to unwind for an afternoon may enjoy checking out any one of the area’s vineyards. Many offer tastings, educational presentations, or host events with music and other forms of entertainment on a regular basis.
6) Get Away from it All in Coronado
Coronado Island calls itself “California’s Crown Jewel,” and although it’s not technically an island, but rather a peninsula, it does feel like it’s removed from everything. Most arrive by ferry and either travel by foot or bike. Coronado Beach routinely makes the list of top beaches in America and gives ample opportunity for water sports. There is much historic charm and, although the area is known for resort-style accommodations and fine dining, it’s possible to tour the area and soak up the atmosphere simply by taking a stroll.
7) Explore Rodeo Drive
Very few streets in the United States are as well-known as the star-studded Rodeo Drive. The two-mile stretch is loaded with high-end shops and iconic hotspots seen in movies like Pretty Woman. While many do go and enjoy a day of luxurious shopping, others simply take in the culture, watch for celebs, and take star tours. There’s no wrong way to do Rodeo.
