Hacienda Heights, an unincorporated, mostly suburban community located in Los Angeles County, is the second largest census-designated place in Los Angeles County by size and by population. Hacienda Heights used to be under Spanish rule as part of Rancho La Puente, which was operated by Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in San Gabriel. The Rancho eventually made its way to a family that used it as a farm to grow avocados, citrus fruits, and walnuts. That is, until the early 1940s when the Great Depression ended the need for these foods and they went largely uneaten. Eventually, the area became a residential community where people came and set down roots. It was well known in the area for having many people who would grow up in Hacienda Heights and stay there for the rest of their lives.
